Margaret B. Rushing

Meet the National President

Margaret Broussard Rushing, a Mississippi Delta native of Acadian (Cajun) descent, began her term on July 1, 2024, as the 23rd National President for Church Women United, Inc. (CWU). She has been an active member of CWU since she first joined the Oxford, Mississippi unit in 1988 and is currently a member of the Greenville/Washington County, Mississippi unit.

She was introduced to CWU through her husband who became aware of the movement when they lived in Oxford. Shortly thereafter, one of her colleagues invited her to go to a Celebration and that is how it all began! There are so many women in the movement who have encouraged and mentored her over the years.

Margaret served as state President of Church Women United of Mississippi; her term ended in December 2023. During her more than thirty-seven years, she has served in various positions at the local, state, regional and national level.

In her professional life, she retired as a budget and financial administrator for the USDA, Agricultural Research Service in its southeast and western national regions. At the time of her retirement, she supervised and managed budget, finance, accounting, cooperative agreements, and travel for all agency locations in these regions. Margaret has received numerous USDA awards and recognitions throughout her career.

She is an active parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Indianola, Mississippi. Throughout her life, she has served as parish council president, parish council secretary, and religious education coordinator (kindergarten through high school) for the children of several parishes as well as continuing to serve as Eucharistic Minister and liturgy reader.

She is the former chair and former secretary of the Sunflower County Democratic Executive Committee. She served on the state board for Common Cause of Mississippi, and is a member of Mission Mississippi, which is a racial reconciliation organization. Also, she is a member of Moms Demand Action, an organization to end gun violence.

She currently serves as Election Commissioner in District 3 of Sunflower County, Mississippi.

Margaret takes her philosophy in life from “The Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5:1-12) and “The Judgment of the Nations” (Matthew 25:31-40) “…Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Margaret advocates for social justice, love, hope, and a world filled with peace.

She is married to David Rushing and the couple has two sons and five grandchildren.
